Wine Region: Barossa Valley, Australia
Amon-Ra Shiraz is an iconic wine that epitomises Ben Glaetzer's passion to create wines that are full flavoured, multi layered and intense but still elegant, stylish and finely balanced. This wine is a balanced between the fruit and the tannin extraction. The fruit has such expression that we aim to preserve the caracteristics of the vineyard rather than dominate them. Deep, dark purple in colour. The palate is full bodied and multidimensional. Black fruits with hints of charcoal and graphite sit in equilibrium with balanced savoury tannin.
Wine Spectator 93 pts -Â Rich, velvety blackberry and plum flavors show toasted walnut and sandalwood accents in this rich and generous red, which is spicy and detailed on the long, lingering finish. Drink now through 2030.
James Suckling 93 pts -Â This is a heroic, sweetly-fruited cut of Barossa shiraz that has a big wave of ripe boysenberry and blackberry fruit flavor. Sweetly spicy, vanilla-dusted oak influence and an approachable, juicy resolve. Drink now.
Robert Parker 96 pts -Â Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2013 Amon Ra has youthfully toned-down notes of blackcurrants, blackberry preserves, plums and cracked pepper with nuances of licorice, dark chocolate, cedar and black earth. The palate has wonderful balance and elegance for its commendable concentration and fullness, with tons of muscular fruit and spice layers framed by grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing with great persistence.
Wine SPectator 91 pts -Â Expressive, with smoke, spice and sandalwood notes up front, featuring a generous core of plush, juicy and very ripe strawberry and cherry flavors. Vanilla, mocha and toast details linger on the finish. Drink now through 2028.
About the Winery
The first Glaetzers settled in the Barossa Valley in 1888 after emigrating from Brandenburg, Germany. The family left Germany on board the Nord-Deutscher Lloyd steamer Habsburg and took seven weeks to reach their final destination of Port Adelaide. From here they settled in a country town called Nuriootpa in the Barossa Valley where they started their new life in Australia. The family were some of the earliest recorded viticulturalists in the Barossa Valley and Clare Valley. Over a century later, winemaking patriarch Colin Glaetzer established Glaetzer Wines, a boutique family owned winery producing premium Barossa Valley wines. Today Colin's son Ben carries on the wine making traditions at Glaetzer Wines. Indeed it was the birth of Glaetzer Wines that signalled a new era for Colin's family which boasts more than its fair share of winemakers.
