Tasting Notes

Glaetzer Anaperenna is a seamless fusion of the two varieties Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Voluptuous, opulent and yet refined, with a very long and satisfying finish. Blueberry, cassis and coffee bean on the nose, fine grained tannins on the palate, dark cherry and cedar spiced undertones flavour. Pasta, light meat dishes. A mouth filling palate with superb freshness and silky, linear tannins.

2015:

James Suckling 92 pts - The nose here shows lots of classic quartz, slate, blackberries and crushed violets, but also a streak of peppercorn. The palate is fairly full and round, but the acidity carries the opulent finish. Slightly overdone but enjoyable. Drink in 2019.

Wine & Spirits 92 pts - Glaetzer sources this wine from the Ebenezer district of Barossa, blending shiraz from 30- to 100-year-old vines with 18 percent cabernet sauvignon (some of those vines are 130 years old). This emphasizes meaty fruit flavors and savory notes of fennel. Or you could read it as chewy cherry skins and licorice. New oak supports the fruit with an undertone of chocolate-rich tannins, even as the wine remains tight, with a clear direction to its flavor length. This should reward several years of bottle age.

Wine Spectator 91 pts - Robust, with gravelly tannins in the background and plum and mineral notes at the core. Espresso and cigar box details linger. The tannins firm up on the finish. Shiraz and Cabernet. Drink now through 2026.

2012:

Robert Parker 93 pts - A blend of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, the deep garnet-purple colored 2012 Anaperenna is profoundly scented of creme de cassis, blueberry compote and black cherry pie with hints of aniseed, pepper, chargrilled meat and underbrush. Big, full-bodied and voluptuous on the palate, the generous blend of blackberry and meaty, savory flavors is structured by a solid backbone of firm, grainy tannins and refreshing acid through the very long finish. Drink it now to 2024+.

Wine Spectator 92 pts - Rich and concentrated, offering spicy plum, blackberry and rhubarb flavors that point toward the long and expressive finish. Needs cellaring to rein in the fruit. Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2015 through 2022.

2010:

Wine Enthusiast 95 pts - These blends are traditional in Australia—they're just rarely this good. The 26% Cabernet gives great backbone and a sense of restraint to the wine, which might otherwise seem overdone or sloppy. Instead, there's a blend of blueberry and cassis fruit, Port-like spices and a long, dusty finish. Drink 2015–2025, possibly beyond.

Wine & Spirits 92 pts - A blend of shiraz (78 percent) and cabernet sauvignon grown in the Ebenezer district of Barossa, this wine’s scents of black currants and roses build tension as the finish turns darker, toward fresh plums and blueberry jam. It’s vibrant and youthfully grand, balanced to age. 

About the Winery

The first Glaetzers settled in the Barossa Valley in 1888 after emigrating from Brandenburg, Germany. The family left Germany on board the Nord-Deutscher Lloyd steamer Habsburg and took seven weeks to reach their final destination of Port Adelaide. From here they settled in a country town called Nuriootpa in the Barossa Valley where they started their new life in Australia. The family were some of the earliest recorded viticulturalists in the Barossa Valley and Clare Valley. Over a century later, winemaking patriarch Colin Glaetzer established Glaetzer Wines, a boutique family owned winery producing premium Barossa Valley wines. Today Colin's son Ben carries on the wine making traditions at Glaetzer Wines. Indeed it was the birth of Glaetzer Wines that signalled a new era for Colin's family which boasts more than its fair share of winemakers.
