Wine Region: Saint-Emilion, France
Grape: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon
The 2008 has an inky/blue/purple color as well as a glorious perfume of spring flowers, blueberry and blackberry liqueur, camphor, truffles and crushed rocks. With great fruit on the attack and mid-palate, a medium to full-bodied, multidimensional mouthfeel and a skyscraper-like finish, this prodigious effort over-delivers, even for this phenomenal terroir.
About the Winery
Is not it said of a wine that he always looks like his owner? This idea has never been as true as at Ausone, where the excellence of the production reflects Alain Vauthier's tireless need for excellence, co-director of the estate for many years and the sole owner since 1997. L The origin of the name of the vintage has never been verified but everything suggests that it honors the memory of the Latin poet Ausone, former resident of the region and wine lover. The only Bordeaux-rated Premier Cru Classé on a human scale (7 ha), Ausone benefits, on certain parcels, from the beneficial presence of a porous underlying rock, in close contact with the superficial roots of the vine, which absorbs the excess water and restores it during hot summers. Thus, in 1956, Ausone came out unscathed from the frost that destroyed 80% of the Gironde vineyard, a survival that makes it one of the few vineyards in Bordeaux to have a grape variety that is more than half a century old. After years of average quality, due to a certain confusion as to the direction of the vintage, Alain Vauthier's inauguration in 1974 marked the return to a level of excellence. As for La Chapelle d'Ausone, which is generally very successful, it is added to the too short list of great second wines
