QUINTA DO NOVAL NACIONAL 1967

Wine Region: Douro, Portugal

Grapes: Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cao, Tinta Barroca, Touriga Francesa

Tasting Notes

A deep ruby with a darker core but no tawny color at all even in the pale pink rim. Nose is extremely aromatic, with an exotic melange of spices that remind me of a mid-eastern bazar, red currents or perhaps pomegranate, candied rose petals, waxy overtones. Lovely. And in the mouth this delivers everything the stunning nose promised: sweet yet powerful and richly flavored, long on the palate, minerality and acidity to frame the intense flavors and the tannic lift needed to give this an almost sprightly mouthfeel.

About the Winery

Quinta Do Noval is in Porto what the Romanée Conti is in Burgundy: a Myth. A splendid terroir steep; the best grape varieties are planted, adapted sector by sector, to obtain the quintessence of this terraced vineyard. This vineyard is located in Pinhao, 130 km from Porto, in the hinterland, one of the most favorable areas of the Douro Valley. The grape varieties are numerous: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cao, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Francisca, Sousao. Here, maturity and sweetness reach rates unmatched anywhere in the country. Some vintages of this area reach peaks at auction, including the most famous cuvée of the field: "Nacional Vintage". A small plot of ungrafted vines, the most fabulous and rare Port. In short, an exceptional terroir, a result that often comes close to magic ...
