Tasting Notes

100% Tempranillo aged 17 months in fine grained French oak. Highly polished, tightly wound and elegant wine with refined aromatics. Fine tannins provide a silky texture, leading to a persistent finish of red berries and sweet oak. Blossoms both in body and flavor with decantation and will age gracefully for years, in the manner of top Burgundy.

Robert Parker 93 Pts - I've always like and admired the wines from Valenciso; they semm to take the best from the traditional and more modern Rioja. To get up to speed, i tasted two vintages of their regular red and revisited the previous vintage of all three wines. To show how serious they are, they explained how they are not going to release the 2013, because "it was a year with lots of botrytis, and since we don's use anti-botrytis products, we had a very short crop. We have doubts about the aging potential of the wine, so the same as the 2003, the 2013 will not be released". As for some good news, they started converting their vineyards to organic farming in 2017 (bravo!), and they are working on a varietal Graciano and a concrete-aged red that should be released in 2020 if everything goes according to plan. One of the names that is undeservedly flying under the radar.

About the Winery

Valenciso is a remarkable birth in 1998 from its two founders, husband and wife, Luis Valentin and Carmen Enciso (thereby aka Val+Enciso = Valenciso). The couple has tremendous experience and previously worked with Bodegas Palacios during its modernization with consultant Michel Rolland. Experienced in both old and new world style Rioja, they have quickly positioned Valenciso as one of Spain's top wineries, which is the most modern of the traditional producers, or the most traditional of the modern producers.

VAalensico has 28 years of wine background in La Rioja. VALENCISO distinguishes by following the Sustainable Viticulture practices, for using exclusively concrete vats, to facilitate the longevity of the wine, and for aging the wine in French Oak only.
