Winery Profile:
The estate of G.D. Vajra, established in 1972 is situated in Vergne, the highest village in the Commune of Barolo. Its vineyards are planted with Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera at heights of 350-400 meters, which results in distinctive and aromatic wines. Their philosophy remains faithful to the traditional and authentic wines of Piemonte. “I try to make wines that give people joy. In the past wine was a food, it was necessary for sustenance. Today that is not the case; we choose to drink for pleasure. I want to make wines that bring people happiness.” ~ Aldo Vajra
Today, G.D. Vajra is one of Piedmont’s best-kept secrets. It was named after Giuseppe Domenico Vajra, who founded the estate in 1972. They are using vineyards that had been in the family since the 1920s. Sustainable farming with an organic approach, this winery uses old-world winemaking techniques, where the ageing of the Nebbiolo is in large Slovenian casks. This style of winemaking is about minimum intervention, and let the Barolo terroirs be reflected in the wine. Most of the wines have received more than 90 points from various critics.
