Valenciso Graciano 2017

$79.00

The young varietal 2017 Graciano feels very primary, with ripe black fruit and still too much oak for my liking, but it has beautiful floral notes underneath the spices and smoke. This is the first time they’ve bottled this wine, as they felt the Graciano grapes had ripened to perfection in 2017. It’s a late-ripening variety that was harvested extremely late (the 27th of October) in an otherwise very early harvest. It’s creamy and young, a bit strict in the palate where the tannins still cling to your teeth. It’s medium-bodied and has notable acidity that, at the moment, combined with the tannin, makes it a bit sharp. It’s a matter of waiting: it should come around with some more time in bottle. There are not that many Graciano bottlings, as the variety barely represents 2% of the Rioja vineyards. 1,708 bottles were filled in February 2020. ~Robert Parker 92 Pts
