Wine Region: McLaren Vale, Australia
Intense inky purple with bright magenta hues. Classic McLaren Vale aromas of blackberries bitter chocolate and liquorice are perfectly held by carefully utilised French oak. The palate follows on from the initial aromas and is rich and full, with the abundant fruit flavours given structure by soft tannins. Have it with Beef Roast or strong aged cheese.
James Halliday 97 pts - Hand-picked, destemmed to open fermenters, plunged/trodden, basket pressed to French oak, tasted at 9 months, the best matured for a further 6 months. Deeply coloured, it has the power of a Rolls Royce, but shares the smooth as silk delivery of that power; blackberries, poached plum, star anise and licorice are perfectly framed and presented by quality French oak, now perfectly integrated.
Huon Hooke 96 pts - The best Medhyk I can recall tasting, this has better balance of oak and is more spicy and Rhone-like in its aroma spectrum. The wine is full-bodied and has real old-vine density and concentration. Powerful but balanced, it's destined to age for the long haul, but is also enjoyable now.
Rob Geddes 94 pts - Freshness of fruit in the polished nutty tight grained oak aromas.Youthful, complex, balanced ripe fruit and oak in long and well-constructed fine grained tannins with a blackberry and black olive intrigue.
