Wine Region: Margaret River, Australia
Grape: Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec
Deep, dark and black core of fruit centred upon currants, blueberries, dark cherries and cassis. Black cardamom, nutmeg, tobacco, cumin and well-integrated oak surround and support an incredibly rich dense nose. Impressive weight and texture are at the forefront, powerfully fruited in the black and blue fruit spectrum combine with cacao, roasted coffee bean and anise. The length is infinite and defined by bright acidity, powder-like tannins and diligent oak
The “Art Series” represents Leeuwin’s most opulent & ageworthy wines from each vintage. They are identified with paintings commissioned from leading contemporary Australian artists.
James Halliday 97 pts - After berry sorting, cold soak and maceration, pumping over three times daily, the wine pumped to French barriques for mlf and 9 months maturation. The Art Series range has a clear family approach to each wine, a focus and sophistication that brings certainty to its long-term maturity.
James Suckling 96 pts - Aromas of black licorice, black berry and rust. Hot stone. Full body, layered and juicy with loads of fresh fruit and chewy tannins. Sexy, muscular cabernet with tone and focus. Screw cap. Hard not to drink now. Better in 2022 but gorgeous now.
Decanter 94 pts - The improved performance of the Leeuwin reds continues here, with ripe, sweet blackcurrant fruit that is wonderfully concentrated, deep and long, with impressive weight. This has elegance, great finesse and finishes gently firm. Drinking Window 2023 - 2037.
Robert Parker 92 pts - Leeuwin's 2013 Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon may be the best version of this wine I've ever tasted. It manages to be ripe and rich while still being svelte and medium-bodied. Baking spices and cedar appear on the nose, but this isn't an oaky wines; those elements are just seasoning for the red and black currant fruit. A creamy, slightly lactic note builds the mid-palate without adding excess weight, while hints of sage and bay leaf linger on the silky finish.
Wine Spectator 92 pts - A bright mouthful of cherry, raspberry and currant flavors, full of energy and transparency to the notes of mineral, dried herb, toast, vanilla and dense espresso. Shows plenty of power on a velvety frame.
About the Winery
Family owned, Leeuwin Estate, one of the five founding wineries of the now famous Margaret River district of Western Australia, is under the direction of two generations who work with a team of highly skilled winemakers to consistently produce wines ranking alongside the world's finest. In 1972, legendary Napa Valley winemaker, Robert Mondavi, identified the future site of the Leeuwin vineyard as being ideal for the production of premium wine and provided early mentorship to Denis and Tricia Horgan in the transformation of their cattle farm into Leeuwin Estate.
