Winery of the Week
Matthieu Barret
Born in Aix-en-Provence in 1975, Matthieu Barret joined his grandfather’s vineyard in Cornas in 1997 and took over the estate in 1998. A seventh-generation vigneron, he transformed the 10-hectare family holding into a pioneering force in biodynamic viticulture. His steep granite-terraced vineyards in Cornas are worked without heavy machinery, using horses, mules and manual labour, to foster soil health and vineyard biodiversity. Barret’s cellar reflects the same artistry: native-yeast fermentations, minimal sulphur, no new oak, and aging in concrete eggs to preserve purity of fruit and terroir expression. His wines are celebrated for their freshness, precision and distinctive character—a modern, elegant interpretation of Cornas.
