How to Store and Serve Wine Correctly in Singapore’s Climate

by Straits Wine Company 18 Nov 2025

Singapore’s tropical climate is perfect for sunny brunches and seaside dinners — but not so ideal for wine.
Heat, humidity, and light are every bottle’s worst enemy, and without proper care, even a great vintage can lose its sparkle before you open it.

But don’t worry — with a few smart habits, you can easily keep your wines in top condition and serve them perfectly every time.

🌡️ 1. Store Cool, Dark, and Still

Wine prefers calm and consistency. In Singapore’s warm climate, temperature fluctuations can cause the liquid to expand and contract, pushing the cork and letting air in.

  • Keep it cool: Ideally between 12–18°C — slightly cooler for whites and sparkling wines.
  • Avoid direct sunlight: UV rays can age your wine prematurely.
  • Stay stable: No shaking or vibration — keep bottles away from washing machines or speakers.

💡 Tip: If you don’t have a wine cellar, a wine chiller or dedicated wine fridge is your best investment. Even a basic unit will maintain steady conditions year-round.

🏠 2. Find the Right Spot at Home

If you’re just starting your collection and don’t own a wine fridge yet, look for a spot that’s naturally cool and dark — like a cupboard away from windows or air vents.

  • Avoid kitchens (too warm) and balconies (too humid).
  • For short-term storage, even the bottom of a closet works better than open shelves.

💡 Tip: Store bottles horizontally to keep corks moist — preventing air from sneaking in.

🥂 3. Serving Wine at the Right Temperature

Getting the temperature right makes a world of difference in flavour and aroma.

Type Ideal Serving Temp Pro Tip
Sparkling Wine 6–10°C Chill for 2–3 hours in the fridge before serving.
White Wine 8–12°C Slightly cooler brings out freshness and acidity.
Rosé 10–12°C Serve chilled, but not icy cold.
Red Wine 14–18°C Too warm? Chill in the fridge for 15–20 mins before serving.

💡 Tip: In Singapore, “room temperature” is too hot for reds — aim for slightly cool to the touch, not warm.

🍾 4. How to Open, Pour, and Preserve

  • Open gently: Use a proper corkscrew to avoid pushing the cork in.
  • Pour slowly: About one-third full lets the wine breathe.
  • Preserve leftovers: Use a vacuum pump or argon gas preserver to keep wine fresh for 2–3 days.

💡 Bonus Tip: Sparkling wines can stay bubbly for another day if you use a Champagne stopper instead of a regular cork.
