#StraitsWineDiscovery: Must-Try Wines For Every Budget

by Straits Wine Company 30 Jan 2023

Here at The Straits Wine Company, we believe there’s a fabulous choice of wine for everyone, no matter the budget. Also, even though prices for daily essentials are on the rise, we don’t believe in giving up on the things that bring you joy – that’s wine included, especially if one of your New Year’s resolutions is to try new wines.

Just for you, this segment of #StraitsWineDiscovery features must-try wines for every budget, starting from $50 and below. The bottles – under our in-store Coravin programme – are available for sampling only at five outlets across Singapore: UE Square, ICON Village, Quayside Isle, Balmoral Plaza, and Rail Mall, so come on by to pick up your new favourite vino without breaking the bank! For more irresistible deals, follow us on @straitswinecompany on Instagram and Facebook.

FOR WINES THAT COST $50 AND BELOW…

Starting off with wines below $50, we have the Peter & Paul Gruner Veltliner Bio 2021 ($43), an organic, fruit-forward white Austrian wine that’s on the light, dry side. In the higher $40s category, there’s the Weingut Weninger Kekfrankos Balf 2018 ($45), which has cherry-flavoured notes paired with hints of green herbs and a slight backbone of acidity, as well as the Disznókö Dry Furmint 2021 ($49) – a pleasantly aromatic yellow-hued wine laced with tasting elements like pear and ripe apple. At $50, we have the Deep Down Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2022. Hailing from New Zealand, this is a ripely-scented medium to full-bodied choice with tropical fruit flavours, a whole lot of depth, and a crisp, dry finish.

FOR WINES THAT COST BETWEEN $51 TO $80…

For $56, there’s the Viña Pedrosa Cepa Gavilan Crianza 2019, a Spanish red that’s toasted in aroma and has hints of oak and vanilla. For another red, opt for the Domaine Louis Chenu Bourgogne Rouge 2021 ($78), a light pinot noir from Burgundy, France. If you’re looking for a white, the Weingut Ökonomierat Rebholz Riesling Trocken 2021 ($58) is it. This Riesling highlights ripe, mineral scents of citrus fruits, along with apricots and peaches, making it a vibrantly fresh organic option to pair with light starters or dishes featuring fish.

FOR WINES THAT COST BETWEEN $81 TO $94…

Lucky for you and your wallet, our wines on this list aren’t priced above $100. At $81, our selection includes two very excellent labels: Kaesler The Bogan Shiraz 2020 and the Jean Paul et Charly Thevenet Morgon Vieilles Vignes 2020. The former is bright, lifted, and complex, with delectable black fruits such as mulberry, blackberry, and plum all coming together to give this vino its touch of sweet spice, while the latter has its nose full of cassis, red cherries, candied peel, and raw cocoa, making this a supple, velvety medium to full-bodied red to sip on. For those who desire a fine, straightforward wine that’s elegant, earthy, and fresh, pick the Pranzegg Campill 2017 from Italy’s Alto Aldige ($85). As for the $90s range, there’s the G.D. Vajra Barolo Albe 2018 ($91) from Piedmont, Italy, which is characterised by how brilliantly it shapes the palate with its floral notes that merge with bright red fruits, mint, and ground berries, and finally, the Dante Rivetti Barbaresco DOCG Bric-Micca 2018 ($94) – a classic, savoury dry red that’s intense and pairs well with lamb dishes.
