The Ultimate New Year Resolutions for Wine Lovers!

by Straits Wine Company 04 Jan 2023

Cheers, it’s 2023! With an unbelievable year full of wine masterclasses and dinners with partners such as MargueriteFOOL Wine Bar and Alegria behind us, we’re looking forward to another amazing year ahead with you. Of course, it’s time to make our new year resolutions and ours is definitely to bring you more quality and artisanal wine from passionate and progressive producers from around the world.

To help make your new year resolutions more fun (boo to the typical ones we set every year), we’ve pulled together a couple of wine resolutions to achieve this 2023! We’re also running a New Year New Wines promotion to help you easily achieve your wine goals – remember, free same-day delivery is available for orders above SGD200, made before 6pm. Follow us on @straitswinecompany for first access to more.

1. SAY YES TO TRYING NEW WINES

Every wine lover’s New Year’s resolution should be to try new wines and find new producers, regions and grapes they like – then be evangelical about them and tell your friends about them. To help you with that, our in-store Coravin program Straits Wine Discovery offers 12 new wines to taste on demand every month. This month, try out the Mano A Mano Venta La Ossa 2018, a perfect blend with a strong palate of spices, coffee and cocoa, or opt for the Leeuwin Estate Prelude Chardonnay 2021, a bright and aromatic white featuring notes of lively citrus fruits. Straits Wine Discovery is available at UE Square, ICON Village, Quayside Isle, Balmoral Plaza and Rail Mall. Swing by, discover your next favourite wine and maybe bring a few bottles home.

2. DISCOVER GREAT FOOD AND WINE PAIRINGS

According to Wine Follyred wines pair best with bold flavoured meats (e.g. red meat). White wines pair best with light-intensity meats (e.g. fish or chicken). Bitter wines (e.g. red wines) are best balanced with fat. It is better to match the wine with the sauce than with the meat. Or to make things easy, head on over to our Mess Hall outlet for the ultimate wine & dine experience. Our latest chef-partner Chef Nicke Wong brings a delectable array of authentic Thai dishes to our extensive selection of wines – find out which of your favourite Thai food pairs best with which wines. We’re thinking of a Trivento Eolo Malbec 2017, pairs beautifully with Pineapple Fried Rice!

3. DRINK MORE ORGANIC, VEGAN AND BIODYNAMIC WINES

Staying fit is probably on your new year resolution list (It’s definitely on ours!) but we’re not going to be giving up on wine anytime soon. Instead, try more organic and vegan wines. They’re healthier for you, better for the environment, and you won’t get those pesky sugar-induced headaches after having a few glasses. And don’t worry about sacrificing taste when you purchase these lower-sugar wines. They’ve still got plenty of flavour to make your taste buds happy. The biodynamic Smallfry Barossa Valley Joven 2020 boasts a fresh aroma and a palate of clean fruits while the Weingut Weninger Ponzichter 2019 is a light-bodied red that combines the floral aromatics of a summer meadow with bright red fruit. It’s certified organic, biodynamically grown, low-intervention/natural and vegan.

4. BUY A CASE AND TASTE AS IT AGES

To amplify your wine knowledge, here’s a fun little activity to do while enjoying a glass in the evenings. Write down what you like about each vintage, from the nose to the palate and compare your notes over the years. It’s quite interesting to see how wine changes from year to year. Grab a case of six from our ongoing Deals & Thrills promotion – currently you can grab a bundle of Château Kefraya Collection Amphora 2018, an exceptional full-bodied amphora wine that’s elegant and complex in the nose and offers fruity and spicy aromas of almonds, black cherries, frankincense, quince and cinnamon on the palate. Check back every month to see what other new wines are up for grabs!
