Erich and Karin Machherndl unite the tradition passed down through generations with forward-thinking progress. They marry the wealth of experience & contemporary interpretation, a journey that went from traditional wine farming to conventional viticulture and now back to the roots with organic viticulture.

Their precious vineyards around Wösendorf have been free from herbicides and synthetic fertilizers since 2007. Organic viticulture enables them to create a valuable habitat with the highest possible biodiversity throughout their vineyards; many insects and butterflies, blossoms, grasses, herbs and shrubs, with a tree here and there. Living soils, living nature, living wines. The Wachau is seen as the most famous Austrian wine region but Erich Machherndl strives to show that organic cultivation can become a part of its identity.

Machherndl wines originate from mostly steep terraces which require meticulous work by hand and a lot of passion. Alongside Wachau signature varieties of Riesling and GV, Erich also cultivates Pinot Gris, Yellow Muscat, Chardonnay and even Syrah. With Machherndl, you’ll get straightforward, lean and structured wines, displaying great acidity and character, whether in the single vineyard Federspiel and Smaragd range or in the joyful, hands-off, unfiltered, low-to-zero-sulphites winemaking approach of his colourful (green, yellow, pink, red…) Pulp Fiction series.
